Olympic Caravans

Background

The Olympic Caravans name has two distinct chapters in Australian caravanning history. The original Olympic Caravan Industries was registered in 1961 by Walter John (Jack) Dimmack, who had started building bondwood and aluminium caravans in Queensland after returning from World War II. More than a thousand were built from 1961 through to the late 1980s. These vintage fiberglass Olympicsstyle caravans, advertised as “the Aristocrats of the road”, are now highly sought after among vintage caravan collectors for their durability and lightweight practical design.

The modern Olympic Caravans is a separate entity, established in 1988 in Melbourne. It has grown into a well-established, respected manufacturer in the caravan industry, focusing on value-for-money family caravanning.

Ownership & Structure

The modern Olympic Caravans is described as a family-oriented business. The company is based at 81 Lara Way, Campbellfield, Victoria, in Melbourne’s caravan manufacturing precinct.

Manufacturing

Olympic Caravans are manufactured in their Campbellfield, Melbourne facility. Every caravan is handcrafted and undergoes quality control checks. The company builds a range of models with sport-themed names including the Triathlete, Sprinter, Marathon, and Javelin.

Market Position

Olympic Caravans sits firmly in the value-for-money segment of the Australian caravan market. Their Marathon 21ft Family was noted at approximately $56,000, described as offering decent value for money — “a good, honest rig for a reasonable price.” The Javelin X8 received a review score of 77/100 from Caravan Camping Sales.
