About Royal Flair Caravans
Background
Royal Flair’s story began in 1975 when Peter Deralas and his brother-in-law Steve Kanis founded a small caravan workshop in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Peter had worked as a technician at Thorn TV, but his passion lay in hands-on manufacturing. Their first business, New Home Caravans, produced around 15 caravans per week, all built by hand with upholstery sewn by Peter’s wife and timber frames crafted in-house.
When the next generation stepped in, Billy Deralas took over in 1995 and re-established the brand as Royal Flair Caravans. Under his leadership, the business shifted from high-volume production to boutique, premium manufacturing, building fewer caravans to a much higher standard. Royal Flair celebrated its 50th anniversary recently, marking half a century as an Australian caravan icon.
Royal Flair holds ISO 9001 certification and is a member of the Australian Made campaign. They are known for innovative designs including the elevator bed system, outdoor entertainment areas (Piazza), and slide-out models.
Ownership & Structure
Royal Flair remains family-owned across three generations of the Deralas family. Billy Deralas serves as CEO, with his son Peter Deralas as Chief Operating Officer. Peter Deralas senior, the original founder, has passed away but his legacy continues through the family business. The company is proudly independent with no corporate parent.
Manufacturing
All Royal Flair caravans are manufactured at their facility in Epping, Victoria (Melbourne’s northern suburbs). The company operates as a boutique manufacturer, focusing on quality over volume. They hold ISO 9001 quality management certification. Construction methods include aluminium framing, composite panels, and CNC-cut cabinetry. The range spans from entry-level tourers to premium off-road and luxury slide-out models.
Market Position
Royal Flair spans mid-range to premium pricing. Their extensive range includes models for different budgets: the Aussiemate and Minisport for entry-level buyers, the Van Royce and Designer Series for the mid-to-premium market, the Razor XT and EcoMate for off-road use, and the Piazza for those wanting outdoor living features. The 50-year heritage and family ownership are key differentiators.
