Phoenix Caravans has a claim as potentially the first off-road caravan builder anywhere. The brand began as a caravan repair company before branching out into modifying touring vans of the early 1990s with tougher suspension to cope with outback travel. Eventually, Phoenix began making offroaders from the ground up.

Roy Wyss started Sunland Caravans in 2003 and purchased Phoenix Caravans approximately 10 years later, combining the two brands. Roy became something of a legend in the caravan industry — an innovator who was fearless in stepping outside the customary way of building vans designed to tackle the worst roads the Australian outback can dish up. The combined Sunland/Phoenix business operated over two sprawling factories on opposite sides of the road in the Caboolture industrial area in Queensland, building almost everything in-house.

When Roy considered retiring after more than 20 years, Jason Wylie made an offer, and a new chapter began for both brands.

Ownership & Structure

The combined Sunland/Phoenix business was owned and built by Roy Wyss until his retirement. Jason Wylie subsequently purchased the operation. The brands operate from Caboolture, Queensland.

Manufacturing

Phoenix caravans are built at the Caboolture, Queensland facility, which spans two large factories. The standout feature of their manufacturing approach is the almost complete vertical integration — the business builds nearly everything in-house.

Market Position

Phoenix sits in the premium off-road caravan segment, with a focus on vans built to withstand the harshest conditions the Australian outback can deliver. The in-house manufacturing approach gives them a quality advantage but also contributes to higher pricing.
