About Kerfton Campers

Background

Kerfton was created by Barry Trippit, a structural engineer with close to 30 years of experience in aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and mine construction. Trippit spotted a gap in the market for a lightweight family tent trailer that complements a modern tow vehicle in both design and finish. The result is a 14-foot (4.3m) camper trailer that brings automotive-grade aesthetics to Australia’s off-road camper trailer segment.

The Kerfton received the 2022 Australian Good Design Awards Gold Winner, was featured on the Australia ByDesign Innovations TV series, and has attracted international attention from design publications including New Atlas, autoevolution, and Expedition Portal. The trailer’s styling is the subject of an Australian registered design, and the kitchen and fridge deployment mechanism is covered by an Australian patent pending.

Ownership & Structure

Kerfton is a privately owned company founded and led by Barry Trippit. The company is based in Oakleigh, Victoria. It is an independent, small-scale manufacturer with no parent company or corporate backing. Production is in its early stages, with the first batch of units assembled at the Oakleigh factory.

Manufacturing

Kerfton uses fiberglass-based high-performance composite construction, which is unusual in the camper trailer market and draws from Trippit’s aerospace and automotive engineering background. The sleek, smooth bodywork is a departure from the traditional canvas and aluminium construction of most Australian camper trailers. The composite construction contributes to a lightweight and durable build. The company manufactures at its factory in Oakleigh, Victoria.

Market Position

Kerfton occupies a unique niche — it is essentially a design-led, boutique camper trailer aimed at buyers who want something that looks as good as a modern SUV rather than a traditional rugged camper. The four-berth family layout in a compact package appeals to families who want comfort without a large trailer. The off-road capability means it is not just a show piece — it is designed for real Australian conditions. The automotive styling, composite construction, and patented mechanisms set it apart from every other camper trailer on the market. Competition is difficult to define given the unique positioning, but in functional terms it sits alongside brands like Cub Campers and the smaller-end of hybrid campers.
