About Avida

Background

Avida traces its roots to 1965 when Bruce Binns, with the assistance of his wife Ruth, formed the Freeway Camper Company and introduced Australia’s first Freeway slide-on camper. The company expanded into motorhomes, caravans, fifth wheelers, and tent trailers. In 1978, Freeway Camper Company rebranded as Winnebago Industries Australia (operating independently from the American Winnebago). In 2013 the company rebranded as Avida RV.

Avida celebrated 60 years in 2025 and remains Australia’s number one motorhome manufacturer. The company re-entered the caravan market in 2013 after a 35-year absence with the Sapphire range, followed by the Topaz and Emerald ranges.

Ownership & Structure

Family-owned and operated since founding. Still in the hands of the Binns family. Avida sells through a network of authorised dealers across Australia. The official Avida Owners Group on Facebook serves as the brand community hub, alongside the Avida Experience Hub for registered owners.

Manufacturing

All manufacturing occurs at a purpose-built 4-hectare (10-acre) facility in Emu Plains, NSW. The company employs over 200 workers and produces more than 600 RVs per year. Avida builds motorhomes on various chassis platforms including Fiat Ducato, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and Iveco Daily. The 2025 Explorer LX is their first off-road motorhome on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform.

Market Position

Premium Australian manufacturer. Their motorhomes are backed by an extended five-year factory warranty, roadside assistance, and capped-price servicing.
